Artist Statement

Historical dress is overwhelmed with references to the social status of women. Women, are at once characterized by their connection to the home, and their ability to surpass assumptions by a paternalistic society to achieve great power and significance. Within this piece, the physical features of a woman’s ability to have children and exemplify domestic gender virtues are seen in the emphasis on the waist to hip ratio and the focus on the bosom. The reference to power is seen in the frill around the neck that at once suggests Elizabethan grandeur but is made of a sheer and fragile fabric commenting on women’s tenuous hold on that power. The text within the piece, are quotes from women who have anonymously posted on a confessional blog. The women relate their frustration in not achieving a balance between work and life, lack of support by society, work, spouse or family to assist in domestic concerns, and a frustration in not loosing the weight of domesticity.
