Artist Statement

Primarily, I regard potted landscape as a miniature, a sort of catalyst of Chinese traditional aesthetics. Potted landscape seems to entail a skewed way of presenting nature in a superficial aspect, just as Gong Zizhen wrote in Bing Mei Guan Ji about this particular “skewed nature” perspective. Rather than starting from metaphysical or aesthetic dimensions, his article is based on sociology and symbolism, leading to his conclusion of this symbolic sort of sickness. However, I believe the essence of potted landscape does not bear this meaning. It is definitely not for the contortionists to distort and misshape. Potted landscape pursues a kind of high existence in a specifically twisted and rhetorical way. It realizes harmony between the human and the natural through a special amalgamation, that is, by choosing and decorating according to the concept of ideal aesthetics.
