Artist Statement
Self-expression for artists is first rooted in introspection about and querying of societal and cultural realities. To try understanding Xiong Yu’s works from this aspect, we could still find such realities as though perceived from his close scrutiny. Different from his painting of the early 1990s, which aims at directly depicting reality, Xiong Yu’s new works turn towards the inside, using special self-experience to strengthen each work’s narration. On the other hand, Xiong Yu’s painting is estranged from reality, depicting an alien world. That is to say, the artist would not like to be chained by the expressive way of original realism, or choose a simple and superficial way to paint. On the other hand, he likes to express an emotional feeling from deep inside, which is the reconstruction of the self-world.
