四川大学艺术学院院长、教授、博士生导师，国务院学位委员会美术学科评议组成员，中国美术家协会理论委员会委员，教育部艺术教育委员会委员、教育部高校美术教育教学指导委员会委员，享受国务院政府津贴专家，四川省学术与技术带头人、四川美术家协会副主席、四川文艺评论家协会副主席、四川美术教育学会理事长。长期从事艺术史、艺术学理论与批评的教学与研究，同时致力于艺术创作。在学术研究上取得了较为丰厚的成果。多次承担全国艺术科学及省部级艺术研究课题。

我觉得在画风景或者说是对自然的表达过程中有一种自由感，不受约束，而且可以把自己融入到自然天地之中，但是我的风景有时候并不是自然本身写照，而是融入了我对天地的那种有缘、恒古、博大、深邃境界的体验。我比较喜欢把人置于那种永恒广阔深邃的背景当中，来反观我们自己，从而更能体现人与自然的那种共存互动的关系，让我们的心灵在无边的自然里面有一种自由感和放步感。

In my opinion, before we paint landscapes or represent nature, we should blend into nature with complete freedom. Moreover, my painting is not only about a particular landscape but also about my experience and perception of the everlasting, broad, and profound qualities of nature. I prefer to paint people into such a vast kind of nature to reflect our existence, which also embodies the mutual relationship and coexistence between nature and human beings.
